Every homeowner has heard the warnings: “Marble stains too easily.” “Quartz is maintenance-free.” “Granite is outdated.” In reality, countertop selection is one of the most misunderstood parts of kitchen design. At Red House Design Build, we’ve guided countless clients through the confusion — balancing beauty, performance, and longevity in every project. Let’s separate fact from fiction and uncover the truths that will help you choose a surface that looks stunning and lasts for decades.
Somewhere around 2015, granite started to lose its appeal in the remodeling world. Marble and Quartz quickly took the spotlight as homeowners moved towards more modern designs. What if we told you that you could still have a modern design with granite?
The truth: Granite isn’t “out” — it’s simply been misunderstood. Its reputation suffered from the era it peaked in, when design options were limited and it was often paired with heavy cabinetry and dated finishes. Today, with more thoughtful pairings and refined palettes, granite proves it’s as timeless as ever.
Try: Pairing a deep, moody granite with soft, matte finishes or brushed brass accents — the mix of raw and refined brings granite back into focus.

Quartz has earned a reputation as the “bulletproof” surface — and while it’s durable, it’s not invincible.
The truth: Quartz is heat-resistant, not heat-proof, and can discolor or crack under direct high temperatures. It also lacks the subtle veining and depth of natural stone.
Try: Combining quartz for utility zones and natural materials (like marble or quartzite) for statement areas.

Marble’s elegance is timeless, but it’s often misunderstood as “impractical.”
The truth: Marble is porous and can etch or patina over time, but with the right sealant and mindset, it ages gracefully. In Europe, centuries-old, worn marble kitchens are celebrated, not feared.
Try: Embracing marble’s evolution; it tells the story of your home’s daily life. For clients who want a similar look with fewer worries, consider honed finishes.

This is perhaps one of the most common myths among countertops.
The truth: Granite is one of the hardest natural stones in the world; resistant to heat, scratches and most chemicals. Yes, sealing it from time to time is important, although not as often as is popularly believed. In fact, you can get sealants with a lifetime warranty against staining.
Try: Giving your countertop a weekly polish – the more you polish, the better it looks – it’s still not very time-consuming. By simply washing it with a granite cleaner or soap & water and applying a granite sealer when dry, you can sustain its longevity for a long time. The entire process may take less than 15 minutes, and you only need to seal it every 12 to 18 months.
Many homeowners chase “perfect” slabs with minimal veining, believing consistency signals quality.
The truth: Natural variation is what makes stone beautiful. The depth, mineral streaks, and subtle color shifts are signs of authenticity. Over-polished, overly uniform surfaces can feel flat and synthetic.
Try: Pairing bold, veined marble with quiet cabinetry, or use subdued quartz beside richly grained wood. The magic lies in balance.
There still seem to be many unknowns about soapstone and it’s use in residential spaces. We’re here to convince you to give it a chance!
The truth: Though softer than granite or quartzite, soapstone’s density and talc content make it non-porous, stain-resistant, and naturally antimicrobial. Minor scratches can be easily sanded out or embraced as part of its developing patina. It’s also heat-proof—hot pots won’t harm it!
Try: Asking to see soapstone samples! You may be surprised how you fall in love with its beautiful and unique look.
